Une avancée exceptionnelle : le Vasorex Japonicus enfin observable en Belgique

Sometimes nature surprises us with solutions more ingenious than any technology.

For the past few days, at Aquiflor, we have had the immense privilege of welcoming a very rare fish : the Vasorex Japonicus . Originating from the Kyoto region, this fish, which has been protected and never exported until now , is currently being acclimatized for a potential introduction to Europe.

And what it is capable of doing could well transform your vision of a balanced natural pond.

An Asian cousin of the hotu, with a powerful ecological role

With its streamlined body, delicate fins and downward-facing mouth, Vasorex Japonicus is reminiscent of the hotu , a clear water fish known for its digging behavior.

But where the hotu is content to scrape the bottom in search of microorganisms, the Vasorex goes much further.

👉 It feeds specifically on organic mud, filamentous algae and plant deposits .
👉 Its mouth, equipped with keratinized folds, allows it to "graze" the surface of substrates, a bit like a cleaner fish in an aquarium… but in a zen pond format .

A species thousands of years old, dedicated to the sacred basins.

According to ancient documents passed down by the monks of Shōfuku-ji , Vasorex was introduced into the meditation pools to maintain perfect balance without human intervention .

“This fish doesn’t just clean the water. It purifies the mind.”
Zen proverb cited in the archives of the Kyoto Aquatic Heritage Institute

The story goes that just a few individuals were enough to naturally limit siltation , while keeping invasive algae under control . A dream come true for any natural pond enthusiast!

A supervised experiment, and a first in Belgium

Thanks to our involvement in several European projects for aquatic biodiversity, Aquiflor was chosen as the unique pilot site in Belgium for hosting a specimen.

The Kyoto Aquatic Heritage Institute , a partner in the project, is overseeing each stage of the acclimatization.

“This is one of the most remarkable advancements I've seen in 20 years of passion for fish farming. This fish could become a valuable ally for the aquatic ecosystems of the future.”
Nicolas, pond expert at Aquiflor

Worth checking out… but maybe not worth buying right away

The Vasorex is currently being observed in our water garden . Nicolas gave you a sneak peek this Friday and Saturday.

🧘 Dim lighting, discreet illumination, silence recommended… Come and discover it in our "dark room" in the Aquiflor garden. Because Vasorex only reveals itself to those who know how to look closely.

A fish that foreshadows the fish tanks of tomorrow

Vasorex Japonicus symbolizes our vision at Aquiflor:
👉 more self-sufficient ponds ,
👉 less maintenance ,
👉 and more connection with nature .

It reminds us that sometimes the solution is already there, in the depths of the rivers and in the wisdom of the ancients.

📍 Come and experience this unique event at Aquiflor.
And if you fall under its spell… we might add you to the pre-waiting list for a future legal import 🤫
