The weight of an EPDM liner depends on its specific reference and thickness. For the Aquitechnics membrane featured on Aquishop, the data sheet states 1.17 kg per square meter. This value allows you to estimate the weight of the piece to be ordered, but it should not be applied automatically to all EPDM membranes.
This calculation becomes useful as soon as you are preparing for delivery or installation. A flexible liner seems easy to move when looking at a sample; however, a large sheet can represent several tens of kilograms, to which must be added its bulk and the constraints of the terrain.

The formula for calculating the weight of a liner
The calculation is simple when you know the surface mass of the product:
Estimated membrane weight = length × width × weight per square meter.
Lengths must be expressed in meters and surface weight in kilograms per square meter. The result is in kilograms. For a 5 m by 6 m liner with a stated 1.17 kg/m², the calculation is therefore 5 × 6 × 1.17 = 35.10 kg.
This estimate concerns the membrane only. The cardboard, pallet, potential core, and accessories can increase the weight of the delivered package. Ask for the gross weight of the package if you need to organize transport or unloading.
Some examples with the stated value of 1.17 kg/m²
| Membrane surface | Calculation | Estimated weight excluding packaging |
|---|---|---|
| 20 m² | 20 × 1.17 | 23.40 kg |
| 30 m² | 30 × 1.17 | 35.10 kg |
| 50 m² | 50 × 1.17 | 58.50 kg |
| 75 m² | 75 × 1.17 | 87.75 kg |
| 100 m² | 100 × 1.17 | 117 kg |
These figures are used to prepare the work site. They do not replace the weight confirmed by the seller for the format actually delivered. Keep this distinction in mind when comparing a custom-cut sheet with a full roll.
The liner surface area exceeds that of the pond
To estimate the weight, use the dimensions of the membrane, not just the visible water surface. The lining also covers the walls, ledges, and bank margins.
Let’s take a final piece of 6.60 m by 4.88 m. Its surface area is 32.208 m². With a surface mass of 1.17 kg/m², its estimated weight reaches approximately 37.68 kg, excluding packaging.
If you calculate based solely on the water surface, you will underestimate both the material to be ordered and the load to be moved. To prepare the dimensions, consult our guide on pond liners sold by the square meter.
Why can two EPDM liners of the same thickness display different weights?
EPDM refers to a material whose formulations and finished products vary. Thickness plays a role in mass, but it is not the only necessary piece of information. The technical data sheet for the reference remains the document to consult.
Also, check what the "weight" line measures. Mass per square meter, roll weight, and shipping weight do not describe the same thing. Some OASE data sheets, for example, indicate the weight of the roll along with its dimensions.
Therefore, do not deduce the net mass of the membrane too quickly by dividing a delivery weight by a surface area. The roll support and packaging may be included. If the data sheet does not specify the method, ask for confirmation.
To compare two offers, place the information side-by-side: exact reference, intended use, thickness, surface mass, dimensions, and packaging. This presentation reveals differences more easily than an isolated figure.
Does weight indicate the quality of the liner?
Weight alone is not enough to rank membranes. A liner suitable for a pond must specifically correspond to the aquatic use, the substrate, and the planned installation details.
Examine the stated compatibility with fish and plants, the manufacturer's instructions, assembly accessories, and warranty conditions. A well-documented reference facilitates decision-making during installation and any potential repairs.
The Aquitechnics EPDM liner offered on Aquishop is presented with a minimum thickness of 1.1 mm and the stated mass of 1.17 kg/m² used in our examples. Have the chosen width and length confirmed before finalizing the order.

Adding the weight of the protective underlay
An underlay stated at 400 g/m² represents 0.40 kg per square meter. For 30 m², this corresponds to approximately 12 kg of dry material. With 30 m² of membrane at 1.17 kg/m², the two materials together represent approximately 47.10 kg in total, excluding packaging.
This calculation assumes identical surface areas. In practice, underlay overlaps and layout patterns can change the quantity required. Calculate each material separately before adding the results.
The Aquitechnics EPDM pack with 400 g/m² underlay allows you to prepare both elements. Its overall delivery weight will depend on the quantities, cuts, and confirmed packaging.
Preparing the path to the pond
Identify the unloading point, the width of passageways, steps, and areas of soft ground. A path that is walkable may not be suitable for a loaded trolley.
Move the drop-off zone as close to the work site as possible, on a stable and clean surface. Avoid successive trips that require handling the same package multiple times.
INRS prevention advice reminds us that handling difficulty also depends on bulk, grip, and the environment. Therefore, the number of kilograms is not enough to determine if a person can move the liner alone.
Plan for suitable handling assistance and the necessary organization. For a large sheet or difficult access, have the means of delivery and installation clarified before setting a work date.
Unfolding without damaging the membrane
Keep the package protection until the necessary moment and prepare an area free of sharp objects. The Elevate installation guide emphasizes protecting the membrane during transport and installation.
Avoid dragging a heavy sheet across abrasive ground to save a few meters. Organize its positioning and unfolding before you begin. A large, flexible surface can also become difficult to control in strong wind.
The lining must follow the substrate prepared according to the system's instructions. Its weight is not a reason to pull it tightly or to eliminate the necessary slack for finishing touches.
The three figures to have confirmed
Before ordering, ask for the exact surface area of the piece, its estimated weight excluding packaging, and the gross weight of the package. Add the packaging dimensions if access involves a narrow door or if you are organizing transport yourself.
Consult the Aquitechnics membrane and send your dimensions to support@aquiflor.com. You will be able to prepare the quantity, the base protection, and handling with the same information, without improvising when the liner arrives.
